One of the tricks to making a vacation a huge success is to pick a destination that can deliver a great experience. When it comes to selecting a vacation destination, the vacation planner needs to take into account the interests and passions of everyone involved in the trip. One great destination location that can cater to a wide variety of interests is the island of Malta. Malta may not be as famous and popular as several other destinations in the Mediterranean Sea area, but it is very deserving of being selected as a destination by people of all backgrounds and means.
Malta is located just south of Sicily in the central part of the Mediterranean Sea. The island has a long and interesting history that includes being governed over by several nations before gaining it's own independence in 1964. Today it is a fabulous vacation destination that offers resort hotels, fine dining, unique cultural experiences, and beautiful beaches. There is a long list of activities available to participate in on the island of Malta too.
Some of the many things that can be done there by travelers coming to the area is hiking, sightseeing, sunbathing, swimming, parasailing, diving, boating, cruising, fishing, biking, snorkeling, and beach combing. One of the top pursuits for visitors coming to the island though is just relaxing and soaking in the culture, scenery, and atmosphere of this beautiful little corner of the world. The simple truth is that the island of Malta has something for nearly everyone who comes it's way.
Here though are five interesting things you probably don't know about the vacation destination of Malta.
1. The island of Malta has no year round permanent rivers or lakes on it. During times of extreme rainfall, there are dry riverbeds that will fill up briefly and geographic indentations that may hold water for a short time, but they will eventually dry up when the countryside returns to it's normal look.
2. Located on the island of Malta is a family friendly attraction known as Popeye's Village Fun Center. This attraction offers rides, food and beverages, games, toys, and more. One of the key parts of the attraction is a recreation of a fishing village. This village is actually the movie set left on the island by the production company that filmed the 1980s Robin Williams film, Popeye, at that location.
3. Visitors coming to the island of Malta from Europe or the Americas should have little problem communicating, as one of the two official languages there is English. The other official language on Malta, naturally, is Maltese. This has only been the case though since 1934 since before that the official language of the island was Italian.
4. The first summit meeting between President George H.W. Bush of the United States and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was held in 1989 on the island of Malta. This was seen as a defining moment in the end of the Cold War.
5. Due to it's somewhat close proximity to the North African coast, Malta is the European destination, sometimes intentional and sometimes not, where many illegal immigrants in makeshift rafts and boats first land.
