3 Tips For Women Traveling Alone
If you're a woman gearing up to travel alone, there are some things you should probably know before you embrace your journey and throw caution to the wind. Traveling alone, whether you're male or female, is quite different and more dangerous than traveling with buddies. If you're a female, however, the threats seem a bit more heightened and you should try to make sure you're safe in every area possible. Here are some tips for traveling alone as a woman:
1. Use your first initial, not name. With simple things like acquiring a hotel room, having an initial on record puts you in a more neutral space than having your full, female first name.
2. Arrive where ever you're going during the day. Even if it means leaving your town on a red eye flight, you'll want it to be daylight by the time you get to where you're going.
3. Dress as conservatively as possible. Take note of how the native women are dressing and dress similarly. However, you may not want to completely disown your own culture in dressing. Adopting the dress style of some cultures can lead you to more trouble than just dressing the way you normally would dress, but conservatively.
Traveling as a woman alone shouldn't be any different than traveling as a man alone, but the fact of the matter is that they can be two very dissimilar things. Take the caution you need to take because it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Trying to arrive during daylight is a good idea. Depending on your destination, you may also feel better if you get a taxi straight from the airport to your hotel. It's more expensive than public transportation, but it doesn't leave you standing on a street corner with your luggage, looking around to see which way to go. Nothing stands out quite so obviously as that! :-)
